Soil Blocking

Soil Blocking

Soil blocking, a gardening technique that involves starting plants in compressed soil blocks rather than traditional pots, promotes sustainable and efficient plant growth and contributes positively to mental health and optimism.

Engaging in soil blocking allows you to connect with nature, fostering a sense of calm and relaxation. The tactile experience of handling soil and planting seeds can reduce stress and anxiety.

Moreover, nurturing plants and witnessing their growth provides a sense of accomplishment, boosting self-esteem and overall well-being.

Gardening activities like soil blocking offer a therapeutic escape, creating a mindful space to unwind, focus on the present moment and find solace in the rhythm of nature.

What you will need:

  • Soil blocking tool
  • A large container to mix your soil in
  • water
  • Soil
  • A tray to hold soil blocks (you can repurpose trays that would otherwise go into recycling like meat and poultry trays from the supermarket-just make sure you wash them well first)
  • Seeds

How to create soil blocks:

  1. Add your desired amount of soil to the large mixing container
  2. Add enough water to the soil so that when you squeeze the soil in your hand, water drips out
  3. Press your soil blocking tool into the soil and pack it in fairly well.
  4. Dispense your soil block onto your tray.
  5. Use the dimples that the soil blocking tool creates (or create your own according to seed depth instructions using a pencil)
  6. Plant your seeds into the dimples of the soil
  7. Pour water directly into the tray and allow the soil blocks to soak it up
  8. Empty any excess water and repeat this daily (you want to keep the soil blocks wet enough so the seeds will germinate)
  9. As your plants start to grow, you can pot them up or plant them in the ground (always follow the recommendations on seed packet for best results.
