Just Breathe

Breathing keeps us alive, but it also plays a pivotal role in managing stress and promoting overall well-being. 


When we encounter stress, our body's natural response often goes to shallow and rapid breathing. This triggers the sympathetic nervous system, commonly known as the "fight or flight" response, leading to increased heart rate and heightened tension. 


Intentional and deep breathing, on the other hand, engages the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and balance. 


By focusing on our breath during moments of stress, we can bring attention to the present moment, diverting our minds from anxiety-inducing thoughts. Deep and deliberate breaths help oxygenate the body, reducing muscle tension and calms the mind. 


This practice not only provides an immediate sense of relief but also fosters resilience over time, as it cultivates our ability to navigate challenging situations with a clearer and more composed mindset.


Just Breathe Activity:

  • Challenge yourself to notice your breathing more (you may want to leave sticky notes around the house or office as a reminder)
  • Take moments throughout the day to focus on deeper breathing
  • Continue to practice often
  • Notice how you feel over time
