Experts estimate that the human mind has between 25,000 - 70,000 thoughts per day! If this isn't exhausting enough, we have to deal with a constant barrage of brain stimulati, taking a toll on both our emotional and mental health.
With all this stimulation, it's no wonder many people find it challenging to meditate. However, Meditation has many benefits and can add so much value to your life.
Basic Meditation is simple and shouldn't feel complicated in any way.
- You'll want to start by creating a space in your home where you can feel comfortable, at ease, and safe and remove anything considered clutter.
- Make this space as inviting as possible by appealing to your senses. You may want to play soft meditation music, infuse the space with essential oils, or stage your space with dim lighting. During the winter months, you may even want a warm blanket on hand to wrap yourself up in. Aside from keeping you warm, this can evoke a feeling of comfort and safety.
- Now, sitting upright, settle in and make yourself as comfortable as possible. When you're ready, close your eyes and bring your focus to your breath. Follow your breath with your awareness as it flows into your body and back out. Continue this process, and if you're mind wanders, just bring your focus back to your breath.
- Consistency is the key, especially when beginning this practice. So find a time that works for you each day when you can devote 10 -15 minutes to yourself. You can strive for lengthier periods of time as you get into the habit.
*Please don't be discouraged if it feels challenging the first several times you practice. And remember that it does require practice to become better at it.
